Hobbies of your close friends

Talk about the hobbies of your two close friends.

I have two close friends, Tom and Peter. They are twins but they are very different in their hobbies.

Tom likes to read true stories and books on real life. He likes to watch the news, late movies and special programs on weekends. He does not like to play any outdoor sports, event though he does not miss a single minute of sports news on television. Instead, he prefers indoor games such as ping pong and some other electronic games. In contrast to Tom, Peter likes to read science fiction stories and mystery ones. He enjoys making battle-ships, carriers and freighters in cardboard. In addition, he likes to design things. Whereas Tom likes to play indoor games, Peter likes to play football and swimming.

I guess that you could say Tom is more of an intellectual and realistic, whereas Peter is more adventurous.

Talk about the habit of smoking cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes is really an expensive habit. The average price per pack of cigarettes, for example, is just about one dollar, people who smoke two packs of cigarettes a day therefore spend $2 per day on their habit. At the end of one year these smokers incur a debt. Since cigarette smoking has an offensive odor that permeates clothing stuffed furniture and carpets, smokers often find that they must have these items cleaned more frequently than nonsmokers do. Further more, a smoker would pay a large sum of money for some diseases coming from smoking. Although it is difficult to sum the cost of these additional expenses, we can say that the expenses do contribute to making smoking become an expensive habit.

An interesting program on radio

An interesting program which you heard on the radio

I always look forward to Sunday afternoons because there are some interesting programs on the radio. School children take part in the children’s program. There will be sound track of popular film hit. Very often this is the program which we all wait anxiously at home. Lat week, there was a very good program of a famous play.

The story is simply this. There were two friends. They loved the same girl without being aware. The girl loved only one of them. As the story progressed, the lovers found out that the girl he loved was also loved by his friend and that the girl also loved his friend. So he sacrificed his love, for the sake of his friend. Thereafter he looked upon the girl as his own sister.

The play was a dramatic expression in music terms. The “sacrifice” was described on effective words, which conveyed a sense of reality so much that the characters seemed to emerge as real people. The emotional discords in my mind were removed by the power of harmony in the play and established a sense of tranquility and peace. Such programs will certainly enliven the daily routine of the average man with a much-needed break. It was a heart warming program.

The choreography has been provided by some famous cine artists of Malaysia. The dialogue had been written by a famous director. The tempo of the theme was kept up. The light music had been entertaining. One could enjoy the play very well without seeing it on film. The one hour entertainment was soon over, but its magic spell remained.

Science fiction as the name implies deals with the certain scientific facts which are woven into the fabric of fiction. If the novelist is careful in depicting the scientific fact, the fiction becomes really interesting. It is not necessary that he must be thorough in his facts but if he can make one believe that the story is probable, then he has done a good job.

There has been several writers of such a kind of science fiction. They are Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and other. “Around the World in Eighty Days” and “A Trip to the Moon” by Jules Verne are very popular for what he prophesied have become true. It does not take eighty days but eighty hours or even much less today to go around the world, so with his trip to the moon. The launching site which Verne’s moon men landed on the Pacific was on their return. Only the fact that Verne’s men did not land on the moon though they went round that moon goes to prove what these writers have some knowledge of science.

The present moon trips have reviewed the interest in Verne. Many journals have praised the work of Jules Verne. It is a wonder how he could have been so correct in launching and getting back his moon men. The appeal is limited because it is merely of fictional value with a lot of imagination. The emotional value is wanting. One shall agree with this remark when one reads Verne’s “Around the World in Eighty Days”. There is enough adventure and several scientific facts are utilized. All modes of transport known in those days are mentioned. Even the geographical fact that as one travel East the time is advanced but once the “END” is reached they may not be any urge to take the book again unless there is a need for reviewing the fact. The human element of romance does not a major part in such kinds of fiction.

H.G. Wells has written some famous science fictions, the most famous of them being “The Time Machine”. “Frankenstein” is another science fiction and has so been notorious for its evil that “Frankenstein” has become almost an idiom for evil and cruelty. It is, in short, the story of a doctor, (scientist?) who wanted to create a man of his own choice. He believed he has found out the way for it. But a mistake committed by his assistant changes the course of the experiment. Instead of creating a superman, the experiment ends in the birth of demon Frankenstein who revels in murderous aspects. Finally he tries to kill the scientist himself but the demon was burnt by people. It is a horror picture with a moral; it was a parody on science’s claims.

A similar story we see in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekull and Mr. Hyde. It may be taken as a big allegory where evil was allowed to grow to kill the good. Again this story has given the idiom “Dr. Jekyl” and “Mr. Hyde” to the English language.

Whatever may be their merit, those stories or fictions are not ordinary man who cannot follow scientific implication.

Give an account of a visit to a book exhibition

Last Saturday our teacher, Cikgu Hamid, took our class to town to visit a book exhibition that was being in the town hall.

We left our school in a chartered bus and arrived at the town hall at about 9:15 a.m. There were thirty of us including Cikgu Hamid and we were among the first visitors to the exhibition that morning.

As we entered, I was taken aback by the sheer number of books on display. I have never seen so many books all together in one place before in my life. I felt thrilled to have the opportunity to take a look at these books on display. I was sure my classmates were equally thrilled.

Cikgu Hamid told us that we had two and a half hours to browse among the books. We were not to fool around and if we wanted to buy any book we were to give it to him so that he could get a better discount. We all promised to behave. Next we plunged among the bookshelves and started to do what we had come for.

There were so many books on display. There were books on hobbies computers, art and craft, machines and others of general interests. I was especially fascinated by the books on nature. So I was more or less glued to this section browsing over the beautifully illustrated books of animal and plants. Never had I seen such vast amounts of information concerning our precious planet.

Before I knew it, one and a half hour had passed. My goodness, I thought I had only an hour left to go over the rest of the exhibition. So I promptly got about doing it.

I next came upon computers on display. There was a sizable crowd gathered but I managed to get in front to have a look. A man was demonstrating the capabilities of a computer. I was astonished at what the computer could do. So for a good hour I was stuck there, eyes glued to the video display.

Finally I decided that it was time I had a breath of fresh air and a cool drink. The crowd in the hall had swelled and the air was getting a bit stifling. So I left the hall for a moment to do the things.

After a refreshing drink I returned to the hall to meet the rest of my classmates. Cikgu Hamid was already waiting for us. One by one my classmates appeared. After all of us had assembled and Cikgu Hamid had purchased the books, we headed out of the hall and into the bus.

The bus started and we were on our way home. It had been a pleasant morning at the exhibition.

The person you hate

Talk about the person you hate most.

We cannot be friendly with all the people whom we came to meet. We hate some people for good reasons. The person I hate most is Jake, who lives a few blocks away from my flat. He is a boy of twenty and a terror in my neighborhood. He is a bully, a pickpocket and an extortioner. He was arrested by the police several times and still he is incorrigible. The boy has grown up in the streets, for his parents had died when he was only five years old.

Once he was arrested for being a vagrant and kept in the welfare home for some time. On another occasion he picked a man’s pocket and was jailed for six months. He demands money from youngsters like me and if we refuse he would threaten us with a knife.

I am terribly afraid of this bully. I am sure, one day he will land up in prison with a longer sentence. This boy is danger to the society and so I hate him. I hope everyone will agree with me.

Your favorite pet

Describe a pet which you have kept.

Rosy is a dog which I have been keeping for the past four years. It was by sheer accident that Rosy came into my hands. Our neighbour Mr. Jones was a dog lover. He has a good kennel in his house where he reared different types of dogs. Suddenly, he got tranfered from the town and he wanted to dispose some of the dogs, he had. He was talking to my father. Then I told my father that we could have one of the puppies; though reluctant, my father agreed. That was how Rosy came into my possession.

Why, it was named Rosy, I cannot say. It is an Alsatian. It is of medium height, grey in color with dark spots near her belly, bushy and glistening eyes. It grew into a beautiful and magnificent dog much to the envy of others.

Rosy can be seen about our house when she is playing or when she is not sleeping. She takes pleasure in sniffing about the comers when she has nothing particular to do. She is as docile as a deer in our presence. When we are not at home she will be at her mettle and no one can easily come near our gate or house. Though she does not bite, she will bounce on the person baring her teeth so much so that she can paralyse any intruder. She recognizes the postman as a friend and so does not do him any harm.

I give her some biscuits and milk in the morning, rice and curry in the afternoon. Usually she is not given any food in the night. When we are at our table, Rosy keeps company with me but she shows no eagerness to touch even a crumb unless offered. So my father likes it. Rosy cries in peculiar way. It is between barking and howling. Sometimes she raises a cry like moaning. That means she wants to go out for toilet.

Whenever I go out in the evening, she accompanies me. My friends are afraid of her because she does not like silly mischievous boys. She shows her displeasure by barking and that is enough to unnerve the boys. My father says, Rosy would soon become a mother. Then I will have a few nice puppies.

Today, there are many books to read. What do you think of the choice of books?

Nowadays in one language only, scores of new books are published in a month, and thousands in a year. Think of the number in all the languages in the world!

Thinking of books in English only, no one can hope to read them all. Even a man of leisure can read only a limited number of books in a year. And most readers are busy people, they can spare only a little time a day to reading. Try as we can, a large number of books must remain forever unread. So a choice of books must be made.

On what lines should the choice be made? Well, it is good to begin with classics. A “classic” of a book has stood the test of time, and has been placed by critics and readers of taste in the first class. A book that is the rage of the moment may be forgotten in a few years, it may be worth reading, or it may not. But a book that has been read for generations with pleasure and profit, has proved itself to be worth reading. So let the young reader begin with some of these. Let him read, in fiction, some of the novels of Scott, Dickens, Thackeray; in history, Macaulay, Gibbon, Green; in poetry, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Tennyson, Browning; in general literature, Lamb’s Essays, De Quincey, Ruskin, Carlyle, Stevenson, and so on. These books will help to form his taste for good literature.

For the rest, individual taste must determine the choice. Some will take to history and biography; some to travel and adventure; some to science and philosophy; others to general literature and poetry. Whatever the subject chosen, the best books, old and modern, should be sought out and read carefully. After all, it is not the number of books one reads that counts most. A few books read thoughtfully will be of more value to the reader than many skimmed through and forgotten.

The kind of books we should read. Give your opinion.

We should be careful in selecting our reading materials. It is a blessing if we have a reading habit because the advantages are many. If we choose the book correctly reading gives us a great pleasure.

Some books are meant for light, reading while others are for serious reading. However reading any books simply gives the reader pleasure and amusement. If we are tired of our school work, it is healthy to read a story book to relax our mind.

There are good books written by famous authors. There are many such books available in our libraries. The stories of well known authors teach us morals, which we need to learn to become good citizens. It does not matter what subject we choose – a novel or a biography. Reading good books makes us realize the virtues of mankind.

There are many good books on literature, history, travel, science and religion. Choose the best book which you think is valuable to you. In Singapore, children can borrow any books they like from the National Library and enjoy the pleasures of reading.

Tell about your hobby in free time.

My hobby is stamp colleting. When I was still only a baby, my mother began to collect for me. Of course, she did not let me touch the stamps until I was old enough not to spoil them. I remember that it was on my fifteenth birthday that she first put them into my hands. They were in four fat books, but since that time I have added three more, so that now I have a bigger collection than any of my friends.

How do I get my stamps? I have never bought a single one from a shop -- so my collection has really cost me nothing. My father, who works in a big office, sometimes brings me home stamps from many countries of the world. And I have friends both here and in other lands who send me stamps in return for ones which I send to them.

Now that I am working for my living, I do not have as much time as before to spend on my stamps. But in the evenings, what can be better than to sit down at a table with my precious books, arranging new stamps in them, writing in the names of countries, or, if I am too tired, only looking through the stamps already in the books? Each stamp has a story to tell me of far countries and strange peoples. I see pictures of men and women, birds and animals that I have never seen. Kings and presidents pass before my eyes, and I can follow the history of nations -- I can see Hitler's Germany spreading over Europe and then suddenly breaking into pieces; Pakistan is born before my eyes; countries rise and countries fall - and the whole time I remain comfortably in my armchair at home.

But my stamp collection does not make me think only of the past. Just as my mother collected for me, so I, too, am collecting for my future child. What better way will there be of interesting him in history, geography and languages, and of making these subjects live for him instead of being only things in school books? If I pass my hobby on to him, he will bless me for it as I have blessed my mother for her wise action.

the uses of the hobby

Give a comment about the uses of the hobby.

An activity in which we take an interest outside our regular work becomes a hobby. Some students make drawing or painting a hobby, for others collection of stamps or gardening. Shell collecting on the beach is the hobby of some children.

Hobby benefits bring individuals. For example, a person who collects stamps of various countries of the world takes a special interest in the study of the subject of the stamp as well as the country where it is used. He may spend a lot of money to buy rare stamps for his album and takes a great pride in owning them. Hobby also teaches a person the value of things or activity he is interested in.

As for me I have had a few hobbies at different stages in my life. My earliest hobby was stamp collecting. Then it was keeping pets. I had two pet dogs and a parrot. Presently my hobby is gardening. I plant flowers and vegetables in my house compound and water them everyday. I nurse the plants by weeding or putting manures at times. Very often I sell my flowers to florists and get a small income.

It s wiser to engage oneself in any hobby than it is idle a way one’s precious time.
