your English teacher

Talk about your teacher of English

Miss Wilde is our teacher of English this term. She has been teaching in our school for three years ever since her return from London, but I have never attended her classes before.

She is rather tall for a lady, about twenty-four years of age, and I find her really slender. She puts on a little make up in very discreet manner. Though young and attractive in appearance, she is dignified and reserved. She is some what strict at times, but never too severe or stern. Her patience is wonderful she will never give up explaining until every one of us understands.

Her method of teaching differs somewhat from that of our former teacher. She pays much attention in correcting our pronunciation and drills us in expressing ourselves in short English sentences. At the end of each lesson, she gives us assignments and lets us work out ourselves. Her method means more work for us to do in the evening, as we have to consult the dictionary again and again; but this help us to remember the new words and phrases and we feel that we have been making rapid progress.

Though my teacher is sometimes severe, yet her kindness and gentility always commands our respect.

some changes in the educational system

Today there is some changes in the educational system. In your opinion, how should we change to raise the quality teaching?

Education is to draw the best in children and to develop their faculties. Education is a complicated affair as it is supposed to equip children for life. Since life styles are always changing, the contents of education must also be changed accordingly. The school is supposed to provide necessary experiences to the child. When a child leaves the school, he may lead a useful life.

But in the traditional school, the child was supposed to learn mainly the 3 R’s. So the chalk bard and the text books were the main stay of the teacher who was to shape the character of the child. Rote memory was insisted upon and examinations were based on this learning technique. There was not much of a difference from year to year on the way children were tested. The examinations conducted did not test all the faculties of the child. So, it was necessary for those who got through examinations to be trained afterwards. In short, children were very rarely taught to learn for themselves. This had continued for so long and the practice had to be abolished.

Once this was realized, many new methods of teaching were tired and many new aids had been used for a better education of children. Today the school is a very complicated organization; the teacher is no longer the sole arbiter. The children, instead of being passive listeners, have been made active participants. They are handling, feeling, planning, creating and learning with newer tools and aids. The subjectivity has give place to healthy objectivity.

In order to make education relevant and meaningful, children are exposed to almost life like situations. They must know how to live as good citizens and honest members of society. They must know how to live as good citizens and honest members of society. The way the school creates situations with these ends in views is important.

On the intellectual side, the library and the laboratory must play a vital role. They complement and supplement more and more, and the use of library and the laboratory must be encouraged through proper assignments. The playing field, various camps, many organizations like the Junior Red Cross, etc. have to be fully utilized to shape the character of the child. Beside the text books, there are other aids for learning. They much be judiciously used. In fact, there are hundreds of ways in which the audio-visual aids can be used with advantage.

Examinations must not be used to show weakness but must be a yardstick for proving the all-round education of the student. The questions must be objective and reliable. The examinations must be welcomed by the students. In order to satisfy the diverse population, there must be diversity in programs, approaches, resources and aims and room for experiment. Examinations should be a challenge for students.

The world is shrinking and nobody can feel parochial. So education must equip students for world understanding and world citizenery. Science and technology must find their places in any scheme of education. Any system of education must help turn out a fully developed and all-rounded personality.

Kind of work you hope to do after graduate

Write about the kind of work which you hope to do when you leave the school.

It is very interesting to speculate as to what one could do after leaving the school. Normally it is too early for one leaving the school to decide upon a definite career. One is not mature this stage to decide upon a future course. Everything is temping and attractive and it is tough making a decision.

A career depends on many factors. The occupation of one’s parents, a successful neighbour or even an imaginery ideal, may influence the kind of work which one hopes to do. If one’s parent is a doctor or a lawyer one may decide to follow the same path. A book one has read or a popular movement may also influence one’s future.

I have made up my mind to become a doctor. With all the science’s achievements, man is not able to overcome diseases. He has found out medicines and ways to combat diseases but there is no way to eradicate them. As far as humanity is there, there will be diseases. Rich or poor, man suffers from diseases and the number of hospitals is a glaring witness to the presence of diseases. So there is more pleasure for me in serving the suffering humanity.

I got the inspiration from Mother Theresa who got the Nobel Peace Prize. What a glorious service she has been doing for the sick and the dying in the streets of Calcutta. I may not rise to that rare height.

A medical man is not merely a man who can prescribe a few tablets and give a shot here or there. In one sense, he plays the role of a helper of the creator saving as many patients as possible. To be a good doctor requires a lot of insight into the patient’s constitution and mind. A medical man must be careful in dealing with individual cases and he must be sympathetic. When a doctor replaces a heart or kidney he saves a patient. It is a challenge which is worthwhile. Since a medical man deal with humanity, he must be humane. Another fact is that a medical man is always intimate with his patient so it is also ethical to divulge a patient’s sickness to anybody.

Without fleecing a patient a doctor can earn a tidy sum of money if he has created a good name in his special field. So, for these reasons, I am attracted to medicine.

What makes an ideal teacher. Give your opinion
(Qualities of a good teacher)

An ideal teacher is a friend as well as a teacher to his students. A good teacher should also be a good friend.

In the classroom, he looks grave and solemn but he is a man of sweet and soft temper. He sometimes appears rather old and sometimes young and bright but he is always, active and alert. He is like and respected by all who know him. When he finds any of his students lazy, he admonishes him, for he wants them all to do their work satisfactorily. He explains the lessons in much detail, and does his best to answer any questions possibly raised by his students. He is indeed a patient man; he continues to explain to his students the points that they do not understand until they are perfectly familiar with their lessons. He takes great trouble in correcting papers, and is very strict in giving marks. In the classroom, he always keeps the dignity of a teacher.

But outside the classroom, he becomes the student’s best friend. He is an adviser to the clubs organized by the students, and also helps them manage their sport teams. When a student is in trouble, he comforts him and tries to help the latter solve any problems he may have.

A good teacher should not only mind the academical work of his students but should also encourage them to take part in sports and games so as to keep themselves fit. He always sets a good example himself so as to influence his students.

He keeps in touch not only with his students but with their families as well. The purpose in doing so is to obtain the assistance of parents in educating the students. He tries to learn about the family condition of the students. Those whose family conditions are good, he urges them to study hard in order to further their study in the universities but those who have no means to carry on their study at a higher level, he advises to switch over to other branches such as: commercial course, business school, military career, and so forth. He thus increases the efficiency of their work, and guides them at the appropriate moment in their choice of a profession.

The teaching profession has many responsibilities, yet it is full of hardship. Personally, when I am grown up, I will engage in educational activities that is, I shall be a teacher myself, for education is full of life. The students you teach are like fruit-trees you plant. It is very interesting to plant seed and to see it sprout, grow leaves, put forth flowers and bear fruits. In like manner, it is a great spiritual comfort to think that you are contributing an important and useful part to the future of your country. For this reason, I find the work of teachers both interesting and hopeful and I will become ideal teacher so as to lend the younger generation on the path of knowledge.

the important role of the teaching of crafts

What do you think of the important role of the teaching of crafts in the school?

The curriculum comprises of what the pupil is supposed to learn and study at the school. As knowledge expands, the curriculum also grows. The aim of education is to prepare the pupil for life such that he or she can settle in life as usual citizens, to themselves and to society at large. In order to be useful one should be trained to use his faculties or talents in the best way possible. The faculties are physical, mental and intellectual. There should be a sort of co-ordination between these faculties and they should be integrated in the courses of education.

The ancient days and even quite recently, education meant only training in the three subjects – reading, writing and arithmetic. But those days are gone. Many other abilities have been built in the child so that he may leave the school prepared to face the challenges of life.

Such abilities include the use of hands as well. Man is not all brain. The curriculum must provide opportunities for motor activities. They can be conveniently called doing activities. These doing activities involve muscular co-ordination.

Man is an aesthetic animal, he can appreciate and admire good and beautiful things. Given the chance and training man imitates nature and creates beautiful things. Man is the only creative animal. What we are today and all that our culture stands for, we owe man’s spirit of creation. Man has created a lot of beautiful artifacts. From the ordinary pin to the much sophisticated supersonic planes and computers, man has shown his ability to create and even to surpass nature. The spirit of creativity involves what is called craft in the school curriculum. Whenever the pupil uses his hands and fingers in doing and creating beautiful pictures or things, it is called art and craft. Art and craft can be learnt for its own sake, or it can be also applied to science and technology.

Craft works pleases the person who practices it. From the child who makes castle in the sand to the designer of complicated machinery, there is the pleasure in creation. Not only from the utility point of view but also from the point of view of pleasure, crafts must find a place in the school curriculum.

Another psychological factor involves the importance of teaching crafts. A normal child is active and wants to use his hand and feet. This is evidenced by many a child activity. This instinct to act is being channeled in useful ways in the teaching of crafts. So crafts can bring about a psychological transformation in the child. In fact, it is the expensive medium for a not too intellectual.

There are many crafts like drawing, painting, carpentry, weaving and bookbinding. Some of these crafts have a profession I value as well as recreational value. Realizing their educational value, Gandhiji introduces his famous craft centered education which he called “Basis Education”. Some of the crafts can be taught in the curriculum of special schools. Crafts have some value later in life for the student. He can practice crafts peculiar to a locality. For grown-up boys crafts with utility value like watch repairing, electric wiring and radio repairing should be taught. This may mean extra work for the staff and additional expense to the society, but it is worth the effect.

Examination makes pupils worry

Examination day often makes many pupils worry. Do you agree?

The most exciting day in the life of a student is the day during the final examination for class promotion. He prepares himself well for about a month before the examination and still he has his fears and hopes on the day of the examination. Even a student who neglects his lessons sits up to make his eleventh hour preparation.

A boy who studies hard may feel confident once inside the examination hall for the first paper. Every student is anxious to know whether the question papers would be difficult or not, except a few who do not take their question papers would be difficult or not, except a few who do not take their lessons seriously. Most of the children eagerly look forward to the examination day.

Unlike the other days, examination days are usually quiet. Every one seems to browse his notes for the last time before going into the hall. Every minute seems precious before the bell goes as it provides the last chance to check the facts properly. Sometimes the last minute reading may help you to score marks.

It is indeed a day of excitement to every child who takes his or her lessons seriously.

The use and abuse of private tuition

What do you think of the use and abuse of private tuition?

Private tuition as against what is being done in regular school is resorted to, in certain cases where the pupil is not able to follow his lessons well and wants to improve his performance. In some cases the parents want to make their child sit at his studies and in others it is a matter of prestige.

Whatever the reasons may be for private tuition, it can certainly complement and supplement the class work provided the teacher and his ward cooperate. It can be complementary when the lessons done in the class have not been fully understood by the student and he have to be told more than to impress upon him for the lesson done in the class may not have caught his brain. For this reason, tuition at home may be the answer.

Generally a class room is not conductive for individual teaching. The teacher pupil interaction highly spoken of is not possible in the class. A teacher normally tries to avoid a dull student. So, such a student may fail to catch the eye of the teacher. In such cases private tuition may be helpful. The pupil may not only be taught but also be made to work at exercises which they would normally avoid in class. If the tuition master is earnest, the pupils can progress and improve gradually.

Some of the topics that are not covered in the class or which requires supplementary reading could very well be done in the tuition hour. Additional exercises could be done, better reading is possible which may lead to better understanding.

Private tuition becomes necessary where the student would not be capable of sitting at his studies by himself because he has no inclination or the parents have no time to look at their child’s academic progress. Most pampered children need a private tutor as a permanent feature.

From the examination point of view some may seek tuition. The students who want to achieve very good results in competitive courses may resort to tuition. This has become a common practice for getting seats in medical, engineering and technological course. An ordinary classroom lecture does not cater to the needs of such students. For many aristocratic families, it is a prestige to arrange for tuition in music and dancing.

Let us now look at the abuses. Tuition may lead to too much of pampering and may kill the self effort of the student. The student would not touch the book unless the tuition master turns up. Instead of his working and learning on his own he becomes so dependant on the tuition master that ultimately the gain would be perceptibly nil.

There are also pupils adopting devious means through the tuition masters to get a pass. The poor tuition master makes himself cheap and worries more about the promotion of his ward than about his own children. Often it is not uncommon to see a boy having more than one tuition master for each one of his subject. Because he pays for the tuition, he looks down upon the poor teacher who is likely to lose his dignity.

But one fact that stands foremost is that tuitions cannot be thorough learning and at best there can only be nibbling of the learning process as the student has recourse for likely questions that may come in the examination through the tuition teacher.

In order to avoid the evils of private tuition, educational institutions themselves may arrange tutorial classes. If the regular teachers cannot attend to the tutorials special tutors may be appointed to attend to very small groups of needy students. Such contacts may help build confidence in the student such tutorial classes may be complementary as well as supplementary. The tutorial system when properly organized will go a long way to improve the efficiency of the student.

Talk about your experiences as a school prefect.

The classroom is noisy place and the master is not there. The children have a tendency to indulge in all sorts of mischief. Childish pranks are good but often children tend to quarrel and fight. The more healthy and vigorous the children are, the more chances of these fights occur. To keep the class under discipline a prefect is appointed by the teacher. He becomes an understudy of the teacher only that he doesn’t teach. He can order and command the class. Other students are afraid of him because he can make a report to the teacher or the headmaster and punishment is sure to follow. A prefect need not be a strong health fellow. He can even be small build but the teacher knows he is capable of controlling the class. A prefect must be a boy of character, doesn’t take sides, must be assertive and stand by his word.

A prefect can help the teacher in many ways. He can bring teaching materials like maps, globes, charts and books to the class. He can collect and distribute notebook, library books and exercise books.

I was chosen prefect. I was reticent and had no gang and was attentive in class. When at the beginning of the term, the teacher announced my name as prefect there was hush and silence in the class and dozens of pairs of eyes peered at me. I stood up and marched to the teacher’s table when he made the announcement. There was a mild cheer and I bowed my head and returned to my seat.

As a prefect I made it a point to be regular and punctual. Thank God I was enjoying good health, so there was mo need for absenteeism. I chose four of my classmates as my helpers. One to look after the register, the second to look the tidiness of the class, the third to be in charge of the field and spots equipment and fourth was in charge of helping the teacher. I was in overall charge besides looking after the library books and aids. We had many types of audio-visual aids and I took a keen interest in them. I looked after the Bulletin Board to make it lively with newspaper cuttings. I would ask a friend of mine who could write in a decent hand to write the daily news. Thus I tried to make many useful activities for the class.

Whenever two boys quarreled and fought I tried to reconcile between them by finding out who the first offender had been and making him apologize to the other. There were cases of petty thefts but I always tried to trace the culprit and restore the lost article to the owner. The culprit himself would get his due punishment. In short, I like the post in which I fared well.

Describe your schoolmates and whom do you like best.

I have many schoolmates, but Tom is the one I like best of all. He is the biggest boy in class. He is about fourteen years old, his shoulders are broad. He is good as one can see when he smiles. I already know several of my classmates. Another one I like too is named George. He wears chocolate-colored trousers and a catkin cap. He is always jolly. There is little John, a poor hunchback, a weak boy with a thin face. Near him is Edwin who is very well-dressed. On the bench in front of me, there is a boy who is called Jake. His face is as round with a small nose. He possesses a special talent; he knows how to make a hare’s face and they all get him to do it and then they laugh.

And there is another curious fellow – my neighbor on the left Jack – small and thick set, with no neck, a gruff fellow, who speaks to no one, and doesn’t seem to understand much but stands watching the master without winking, his brow lined with wrinkles, and his teeth set and if he is questioned when the master is speaking, he make no reply the first and the third time he gives a kick.

And beside him there is a bold, cunning face belonging to a boy named Peter, who has already been expelled from another school. There are, in addition, two brothers who are dressed exactly alike who resemble each other to a hair.

But the most handsome of all, the one who has the most talent, who will surely be the head this year also, is Edward.

Truly I like Edward, the son of the blacksmith, the one with the long jacket who seems sickly and pitiful. It is said that his father often beats him so he is very timid and every time that he addresses or touches someone, he says “Excuse me” and gazes them with his kind, sad eyes. But Tom the biggest is the best of all, I think.

School life is the most difficult time

School life is the most difficult time but it also keeps many joys for us. Do you agree?

School life is the most interesting period in one’s entire life. Bit the students generally hold quite a different view. They are tired of the cares and worries of their school work. They long to be grown-ups. They think that they have to follow some hard fast rules in schools. At home they have to obey their parents. They greatly dislike this. They have to work hard to pass examination if not they get scolding.

But I look at things from quite a different angle. I am a student and as such I have some duties and responsibilities. I have to do as my parents bid me to do. I have to learn my lessons reading and writing a lot. I have to please my teachers by my study and good behaviour. I have to work hard. If I do my duty diligently, I have nothing to be afraid of. I know that my parents at home and the teachers at school are all my well wishers.

I feel very proud of myself when I see that my parents take care of me. The love of teachers is a rare thing and I know that I have to live up to their expectation.

My first day at school is a day I will never forget. I went to school for the first time when I was only seven years old but I can recollect all the happenings on that day. The day before my school opened, my father asked me to keep my books ready.

The next morning, I woke up very early. Then I bathed and dressed myself neatly. Then my father took me to school. In the school I saw a number of new boys and girls waiting in the corridor. They were all like me in the school for the first time. I was then taken to a classroom.

For sometime, I found myself helpless, but it did not take much time for me to be friendly with other students. After two periods, they began to tease me, I was much annoyed. During the recess time, all my classmates gathered around me. One pulled my shirt while another pulled my ear. A third boy challenged for a fight. I was frightened and began to cry. My teacher seeing me crying came to me and asked me why I was crying. When I told him my “story”, the teacher punished the boys, and from that time onwards they stopped bullying me. We had no lessons on the first day. But lessons started from the second day. I was really happy to be in school on the first day. It was indeed a memorable day.
